Football's Craziest

Bilel Moshni
Position Defender Age 28
Nationality Tunisian Club Unattached

On the 31st May earlier this year, Bilel Moshni made a name for himself, but not in the most desirable manner for a footballer. In what turned out to be his final match for Rangers, Moshni reacted to Motherwell striker, Lee Erwin, who pushed the tall-Tunisian in the back, with a flurry of aggression and a lot more hits than Floyd Mayweather landed on Manny Pacquiao. Consequently, Moshni was sent off, caused quite the stir in the media, received a seven-match ban from the SFA and his marching orders from Scottish Football as Rangers let him go. This was rubberstamped by his agent who said his client’s career in “British football is over.”

To think this was Moshni’s only moment of madness is a moment of madness in itself. His first move into English football was with Southend. In his debut season, he was sent off three times and that prompted then manager Paul Sturrock to say Moshni “was walking foul with his ill-discipline.”

If his first impressions weren’t telling enough, he heightened them in the second season with The Shrimpers. In the 2011/12 season, he didn’t show up for the whole of Southend’s pre-season. Why? Because he thought he was better than the League One outfit and wanted to join a bigger club. West Ham were interested and did offer him a trial but their transfer bid for too low for Southend’s liking.

Instead, Moshni went back to Southend to get his head down and start playing football again. 27 minutes into his big return, he was sent off for a high challenge. After a brief loan spell at Ipswich and 62 appearances for Southend, Moshni made the move up-north to Scotland to join Rangers in 2013.

Rangers knew of Moshni’s terrible disciplinary record yet still took a gamble on the Tunisian international. However, Moshni was Moshni and in a pre-season game with Derby County, he was sent off for performing a WWE-style flying head-butt on Rams’ striker Chris Martin. The SFA reacted angrily and suspended him for two domestic matches.

When he finally got to represent Rangers in a competitive league game, he didn’t receive a single yellow or red card for the rest of the season. Only joshing, he was charged with violent conduct and banned for a further three matches when he got into an altercation with Hibs defender Liam Fontaine. A glittering domestic career, thus far!

Perhaps the achievement and the immense pride of putting on your nation’s jersey would instil some self-control and responsibility?  Sadly not. He was brought into the Tunisian squad for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations but after the opening match in which he was an unused sub, he stormed out the dressing room and had to deny that he was going to leave the squad and just focus on a pre-season at a new club where he can happily be charged with violent conduct and pick up red cards as he pleases. Allegedly.

But, give credit to the man, he has just been offered a three-year £1m deal with Club Africain in his home-country to keep referees busy as a bustle of Moshni’s best Street Fighter combinations.

Is Russia fit to host the next World Cup?

Much has been made about the decision to give Qatar the 2022 World Cup but a few days after the latest incident of racism in Russia, question marks are being raised about the Russians' capabilities of hosting a safe and successful tournament.

Ex-Arsenal man, Emmanuel Frimpong, was sent off for Russian outfit FC Ufa was flipping the bird whilst responding to racist monkey chants from Spartak Moscow fans and now faces a multi-match league ban.

On top of that, his own club's general director, Shamil Gazizov, criticised the Ghanaian: "What Frimpong did was wrong. Sometimes you even have to hold back the tears and put up with it." In Russia, any player who is racially abused has to just 'put up with it'.

Frimpong told reporters after the match: "When the match was stopped, the fans started shouting ‘monkey’ at me. Then the monkey chants started. I don’t have any problems with the Spartak fans in general. I just did not keep my cool, I showed my emotions and it was my mistake. I want to say sorry for what I did.”

So not only have Russia accepted racism, they have made a player who was visibly upset apologise for standing up to it - albeit, in a counterproductive manner. But what can a player do in response?

Three other racially abused players in Russia since 2013 have been punished for making insulting gestures in response to the racist abuse they receive from fans. A recent report has shown that over 100 racism-related incidents in football over the last two seasons. A fitting place to host a carnival of football in a place where they reduce certain players to nothing more than barbaric carnival animals.

But Russia doesn't just stop at racism, in 2013, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed into law a bill banning the "propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations to minors.” The 2022 World Cup hosts Qatar holds a fairly lax view on homosexuality in their country as being gay is illegal...

LA Galaxy's Robbie Rogers has responded to FIFA's 'insane' decision to give the next two World Cups to homophobic countries, he said: "“I would never pressure anyone into speaking about the issue but it is absolutely insane. If you look at the next few World Cups, they are in places where, if I were to go, I would possibly be imprisoned or beat up or stoned to death. It is pretty ridiculous."

He went onto say: "There is going to be number of gay fans that will go to watch the sport. Of course there is going to be another gay footballer there. I think it is an issue that needs to be spoken about and discussed with FIFA because every player should feel safe when they go to a World Cup."

Rogers' interview with Sky Sports about 'coming out' and FIFA's decision to give Russia and Qatar the next two World Cups, respectively.

It is not 100% certain whether or not Russia and Qatar will host the next two World Cups due to the recent circus of corruption at FIFA, but if they do, there are numerous concerns for travelling fans and players.

Bolton's latest recruit from Madrid

Bolton have wrapped up the deal to sign 22-year-old Derik Osede from Real Madrid on a three-year deal - but he isn't the first player to sign for Bolton from the Madrid giants.

The likes of Ivan Campo, Fernando Hierro and Marcos Alonso all made the shock move to the North-West of England to play for Bolton Wanderers.

in 2010, Marcos Alonso joined Bolton whilst they were still in the top flight of English football but it's fair to say he didn't light up the Premier League in his time there. He amassed nine league games and one goal in two years before being sold to Fiorentina in May 2013. Last season he was sent out on loan to Sunderland to help them avoid relegation.

The former Spanish and Real Madrid captain Fernando Hierro became a cult hero at the then called Wanderers Stadium in his one season at the club. He didn't join directly from Real as he spent a season at Qatari outfit Al Rayyan but he teammed-up with Sam Allardyce for the 2004-2005 season. Hierro played 29 times and notched one goal in a 2-3 defeat to Norwich City.

The floppy-lidded Ivan Campo made the biggest impact at Bolton out of all the players who signed from Real Madrid. Campo found himself out of favour in Madrid and initially joined Bolton on loan in 2002 but he unexpectedly penned a three-year contact after admitting he would rather live in Bolton than Madrid - perhaps that got lost in translation but nevertheless, he went on to become a Bolton hero.

Campo's aggressive style saw him fit in nicely but in the 2006-2007 he topped the charts in an unwanted statistic of having the most yellow and red cards in the league. However, on the opening day of that very season, Campo struck a 43-yard pile-driver past England number one Paul Robinson prompting Big Sam to say that the goal of the season had been decided after just one match.

The newest recruit from Madrid to The Macron, Osede, has worked his way up from playing for Madrid B and Castilla as well as representing Spain at every level of the youth team despite his desire to play for Nigerian national team.

Osede is Neil Lennon's third summer singing as he joined former Man United 'keeper Ben Amos and deadly lower league striker Gary Madine from Sheffield Wednesday.
